Songwriters – Memory Keepers

We all have memories that stand us still in a single moment. We all have memories that take our minds and our hearts elsewhere, momentarily.

Perhaps you are the keeper of a long list of these triggers? They are all invaluable resources for us as songwriters to draw from, reach into, translate, sink into or scrape away at.

Next time you notice such a trigger or such an emotional side-step from the here & now, stay in there for a while and purposefully drench yourself in the experience. Your own mind’s experience. Then write it down using the best language you can find, to express what that all feels like and where you feel you’re going or have been, because of that feeling.

Musically, find the right mood that suits the emotion you feel most strongly as a result of letting yourself drift away on that extraordinary, paranormal mini-getaway from what you might consider to be your usual day.

We as songwriters, are Memory Keepers in many, many ways.
